Man, what an interesting read! Thank you Matt! Definitely looking forward to your next installment… One of the things about your podcast that I find particularly amusing is when you and Moynihan start talking baseball and make Kmele hilariously disconnect from the conversation… my vote is you should talk more random baseball - surprise Kmele, lol.
Have you been playing the BBREF immaculate grid? I used to be a total stat-head, and if it was 20 years ago, I’d probably complete nearly every grid. I’m finding, however, that my 44 year old brain has apparently rededicated baseball space to other “things”, and many days I look at the grids and my brain is just mush. But it is so fun! Thanks again!
I do, and it's very interesting to see what the memory holds onto and does not. Basically, '70s baseball cards, Glory of Their Times characters, Strat-o-Matic rando Old Timers (Ripper Collins!), and obviously Angels obscurities are my go-to. Anything involving Rockies/D-Backs/Devil Rays is my bane, along with Silver Sluggers, etc. Then there are the weird dyslexias -- always mixing up the Browns (and White Sox) with Senators. But I probably play 1.5 times per day (one on my phone, one on my laptop, though I do not duplicate players or look anything up).
I’m glad I’m not the only one finding pure joy in testing my baseball memory! I really, really struggle in almost all instances with any grids that are two teams, for some reason. I don’t cheat either, but I do use the opportunity to research and look up the possible results, and I’m always astounded at how dense I can be and how obvious some of the answers are. I’m also finding the percentages of picks to be really interesting…how a lot of people all seem to pick the same player for a particular grid position, given a multitude of potential choices. Thanks again Matt! If you ever get down to spring training in AZ and want someone to buy you a (fill in your drink of choice), lmk!!
Sounds like Josh Hamilton would have fit right in on those early 60s teams.
And I'm naming my next dog Grba.
